Church Directory Settings

Settings → Church Directory controls what the Church Directory block is allowed to display. It's a single decision that applies everywhere the directory appears — including any directory block someone adds later.

The toggles

| Setting | Default | | |---|---|---| | Show email addresses | On | | | Show phone numbers | On | | | Show addresses | Off | The most sensitive field, and the hardest to take back | | Show birthdays | On | Month and day only — the year is never shown | | Show anniversaries | On | | | Show "member since" years | On | |

Household names and household members are always shown — they're what groups a family together in the listing.

Switching something off actually removes it

When a toggle is off, that information is never sent to the page at all. It isn't hidden with styling, and it isn't tucked away in the page source where someone could find it by viewing source or reading the network response. It simply isn't there.

That means switching Show addresses off is a real fix, not a cosmetic one — and switching it back on immediately restores addresses for everyone with the page password.

Addresses are off by default

Every other toggle starts on. Addresses start off, deliberately.

A home address is the one field in the directory that creates a genuine safety problem if it reaches the wrong person — someone leaving an abusive relationship, a foster family, a member of law enforcement. Because the directory sits behind a shared password that gets forwarded, you should turn addresses on only after deciding that's a risk your church is knowingly taking.

If you want the connection benefit without the risk, put a neighborhood or a city in the address field instead of a street address.

You still keep the data

Switching a toggle off hides the information from your website. It does not delete it from Studio — office staff can still look up a phone number in Structure → People → Directory Members.

So a reasonable setup for many churches is: keep full details in Studio for office use, and show only names and emails on the site.

Tip: Changing a toggle takes effect on your live site within a minute or two, the same as any other content change. You don't need to republish the directory page.
